Privacy policy

Last updated 8 September 2026.

This policy explains what The Betts Insurance Limited does with information about you. We have tried to write it in plain words. If anything in it is unclear, ask us and we will explain it.

Who we are

The Betts Insurance Limited, registered at 8 Bathurst Street, Freetown, Sierra Leone, but operating at 7 Scan Drive, Off Spur Road, Freetown, Sierra Leone. We are licensed by the Sierra Leone Insurance Commission (SLICOM), licence number IC021. We are responsible for the information described here. Telephone +232 33 918 918 or +232 71 918 918, email info@thebettsinsurance.com.

This policy covers our website, your customer portal and the Betts Insurance mobile app. It does not change the terms of any insurance policy you hold with us; those are set out in your policy wording and schedule.

What we collect

  • Who you are. Your name, date of birth, gender, nationality, occupation, and an identity number if you give us one, such as a National ID number, voter ID or passport number.
  • How to reach you. Your telephone number, email address and postal address.
  • What you are insuring. The answers you give on a quote or proposal form. Depending on the cover that can include a vehicle and its registration, a property and its construction and use, goods in transit, a business and its payroll, your occupation, and the people you nominate as beneficiaries.
  • Claims. What happened, when and where, and any photographs or documents you send us in support. For accident and liability claims this can include information about injuries and medical treatment.
  • Money. Your Betts wallet balance and every movement through it, the mobile money number or bank account you pay in from or withdraw to, and the premium and claim amounts on your record. We never see or hold your mobile money PIN or your bank password.
  • How you use the service. Sign-in times, the device you registered for notifications, and technical logs that record errors so we can fix them.

Most of this comes from you. Some may come from an agent, broker or Betts Kompin who introduced you to us, and some is created by us in the course of insuring you, such as your policy number and your premium.

Why we use it

  • To give you a quote and to decide whether we can offer cover.
  • To issue your policy, produce your certificate and schedule, and administer your cover, including renewals and changes.
  • To take premiums and to pay claims and refunds.
  • To handle claims, including investigating them and arranging reinsurance.
  • To answer your questions and deal with any complaint.
  • To meet our duties as a licensed insurer, including reporting to SLICOM and keeping the records our licence requires.
  • To detect and prevent fraud, and to keep the platform secure.
  • To send you marketing about our products, but only if you have said we may. You can withdraw that at any time in your profile.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your information to anybody. We share it only where we need to, and only as much as is needed:

  • The companies that run the platform for us. Supabase (our database and sign-in), Amazon Web Services (hosting, document storage and the email we send you), Monime (payments in and out), Expo (delivering notifications to your phone) and Sentry (recording technical errors, which is configured not to collect personal details). They act on our instructions and may not use your information for their own purposes.
  • Reinsurers, who share the risk on the policies we write, and who receive the information needed to do so.
  • The agent, broker or Betts Kompin who introduced you, so that they can service your business and be paid their commission.
  • SLICOM and other authorities, where the law, our licence or a court requires it.
  • Our professional advisers, such as auditors, lawyers and loss adjusters, where they need it to do their work for us.

Where your information is held

Our database, our document storage and our email are hosted in data centres in Ireland operated by Supabase and Amazon Web Services. Payments are processed by Monime in Sierra Leone. This means information about you is stored outside Sierra Leone. We chose providers who encrypt data in transit and at rest, and we require them to protect it to the standard described here.

How long we keep it

We keep the record of any policy we issue, any claim you make and any money that passes between us for as long as our licence and Sierra Leone law require when you are our customer, and no longer than six years after you stop being a customer, in the spirit of the National Data Protection Policy. Technical logs are kept for a short period only. If you close your account, we delete your sign-in and your personal contact details straight away and keep the underlying insurance and payment record, which no longer carries your contact details. There is more about this on our deleting your account page.

Your rights

  • See what we hold. Ask us for a copy of your information.
  • Correct it. Tell us if anything is wrong and we will put it right.
  • Close your account. You can do this yourself in the app or portal, under Profile.
  • Stop marketing. Turn it off in your profile, or tell us, and it stops.
  • Complain. To us first, and to SLICOM if we cannot settle it between us.

Some rights have limits. We cannot delete the record of a policy we have underwritten or a claim we have paid, because we are required to keep it. To exercise any of these, email info@thebettsinsurance.com or telephone us. We will ask you to confirm who you are first.

How we protect it

Access to your records is restricted by the database itself, so one customer can never see another’s. Our staff sign in with a second factor from an authenticator app. Connections to our database are encrypted and verified. Money leaving the business needs two different members of staff. Our website sits behind a web application firewall, our cloud account is monitored for threats, and every change to a record is logged with who made it and when. No system is perfect, but if something goes wrong that affects you, we will tell you.

Cookies

Our website and portal use a small number of cookies that are necessary to keep you signed in and to keep the site secure. We do not use advertising cookies and we do not track you across other websites.

Children

Our digital services are for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information about children through them, although a child may be named on a policy, for example as a beneficiary.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will publish the new version here and change the date at the top. If the change is significant we will tell you directly.
